Masters Magic On The Farm
Written by GCAmTour.com/Portland    Sunday, 08 April 2012 00:00

Aurora, OR—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of Portland continued their 2012 season at Langdon Farms Golf Club on Saturday with the Oregon Masters.  The course conditions were less than ideal but the weather made up for it with beautiful sunshine and very pleasant temperatures for the first time this Spring.  Another great field featured multiple winners from the 2011 & 2012 season including the Portland Kickoff Classic winners Joshua Thompson, Barry Lauderbaugh, Brent Moschetti and Jeffrey Gotchall all looking to go back-to-back.  The players battled throughout the day with the wet and sloppy course conditions but in spite of that some tremendous scores were made.

In one of the most exciting finishes of the tournament, the Championship Flight was won by Nate Strand of Olympia, WA who outlasted Joshua Thompson of Eagle Creek to win his first event of the season.  This flight was truly the tail of two nines.  Mr. Thompson would take the early lead through nine holes with a 37 to lead by 3 over Chad Sorenson of Portland and by 4 over Mr. Strand.  Nate Strand would turn it on over the closing holes going two under for the last 5 holes to seize the one shot victory over Mr. Thompson with a final score of 77.  Mr. Strand’s round was highlighted by three birdies over the final 12 holes and only two bogeys over that closing set of holes as well.  Mr. Thompson’s 77 was a few shots off the scorching pace he set last week and was followed by Mr. Sorenson with an 81.  Newcomer Darrin Dow of Redmond had to withdraw on the 2nd hole with an injury.

The Palmer Flight was won by rookie Carl Leonard of Vancouver, WA in his first event on Tour.  Mr. Leonard was consistent throughout the day and ran away with this flight, winning by 9 shots with his 5-over par round of 76. His round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4, 16th hole.  Also playing in this flight was visiting Seattle Tour player, Linda Selegue of Renton, WA who finished with an 85, Grant Niskanen of Klamath Falls carded a 90, Steve Cochran of Camas, WA shot a 92 and Michael Arnot  totaled a 94.

The Hogan Flight was another runaway victory by Barry Lauderbaugh of Auburn, WA who carded a solid round of 11-over par, 82 to win by 8-shots.  This was Mr. Lauderbaugh’s 2nd win in as many tries on the Portland Tour this season.  Needless to say he must be enjoying visiting the Portland Tour from Seattle.  Also playing in the field were Harold Farnsworth of Vancouver, WA who finished with a 90 and Jeff Weiss of Portland who also finished with a 90.  Completing the field was Donald Iman of Aurora who had a rough day and could only manage a 96.

The largest flight on the day, the Sarazen flight, was won by returning player Woody Wallis of Fairbanks, AK who was able to break into the 70’s on the day with a 79 to win by 4-strokes.  Mr. Wallis had a great back nine shooting a 2-over par 38 to secure the victory over BJ Cardinal of Ashland who carded a round of 83.  Closely behind was Lloyd Hurt of Washougal, WA with an 84, Bill Waggoner of Beaverton with an 86, Frank Fladger of Beaverton managed an 88, Benjamin Ciobanu of Vancouver, WA shot an 89, Clifford Reynolds of Madras finished with a 91, Kelly Gray of Aurora carded a 92 and completing the field was Dan Siguaw of Kirkland, WA with a 93.

Jones Flight was the smallest in the field on the day with only two players.  In the end it was a runaway victory for the 2011 Player of the Year on the Portland Tour, Gregory Smith of Washougal, WA.  Mr. Smith carded a round of 21-over par, 92 to win by 14 strokes.  Portland Kickoff Classic Champion, Fred Corona struggled on the day and finished with a 106 total.  Mr. Smith’s round was highlighted by pars on 3 of the first 7 holes.   Mr. Corona also had 3 pars over the first 7 holes but the backside would take its toll on him to leave him contemplating what went wrong and how can he get back in the winner’s circle next time out.

The Senior Jones Flight was won by Ron Snook of Corvallis who’s bogey on the final hole to shoot a 91 was just good enough to outlast Brent Moschetti of Madras who finished one shot back with a 92. The two players were actually tied going into the closing hole after Mr. Snook made par on 17 and Mr. Moschetti struggled and made a double bogey to allow Mr. Snook the opportunity to snatch the victory away.  Also playing in the flight were Robert Bourne of Oregon City who carded a 98, Ron Humble of Junction who also finished with a 98, Doug Tilson of Beaverton who likewise finished with a 98 and Ed Heissler of Gresham who shot a 101.

The Snead Flight was again won by Jeffrey Gotchall of Milwaukee who ran away with it by shooting a 19-over par round of 90 to win by 16 strokes.  It was Mr. Gotchall’s 2nd win in a row for the newcomer to the Portland Tour. In 2nd place was Keith Pearson of Phoenix, OR who finished with a 106, Paul Nelson of Happy Valley carded a 108 and rounding out the flight was Frank Gray of Aloha with a 111. Jim Brown of Aloha also competed but had to withdraw on the back nine after aggravating a previous injury.
