FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
PORTLAND, Ore.- Eliminating a nine-game losing streak, Corban College upended Concordia University 63-50 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball action on Tuesday.
With the result, Corban moved to 7-14 on the season with a 3-8 mark in the CCC while Concordia dropped to 11-10 for the year and 7-4 in the league. The Corban win avenged a one-point loss to the Cavaliers at home on Jan. 8.
Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore./Churchill H.S.) and Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore./Cascade H.S.) pushed the Warriors to the win with each taking over the offensive firepower in separate halves. In the first, Steigleman shot 7-of-10 from the floor for 14 points to help give Corban a 33-20 lead entering intermission. In the later period, Goette scored 12 of her 18 points to help hold off a late Concordia rally.
Tied at two, a Joyce Oniah (Portland, Ore./Franklin H.S.) layup gave Concordia its only lead of the game, but a Steigleman jumper 22 seconds later tied the match while a successful shot Goette at the 14:49 mark gave the Warriors a lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
With 8:26 remaining in regulation, Corban created its largest lead of 19 with a Goette free throw. From there, the Cavs would generate a 15-3 run to bring the margin back to a manageable seven points with 3:20 on the clock, but ran out of steam on the way to the 13-point loss.
Steigleman finished with 22 points while teammate Goette recorded 18. Danielle Clauson (Edmonds, Wash,/King's H.S.) led Concordia with 12 points via 4-of-12 shooting from the floor. The freshman also collected nine rebounds to fall one shy of her third collegiate double-double. Corban's Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore./N. Medford H.S.) notched nine assists against one turnover in 39 minutes of action.
Concordia managed a 39-38 lead in rebounding but shot 30.4 percent from the floor, including a 24.1 rate in the first period. Meanwhile, the Warriors hit 13-of-25 in the first half for 52.0 percent. Both teams scored 30 in the second period.
Concordia resumes action on Saturday when the Cavs travel to Northwest Christian College a day after Corban faces the Beacons. Opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
