Cinderellas Crowned On The Farm

AURORA, OR—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of Portland concluded their 2012 season at Langdon Farms Golf Club on Sunday with the Portland Tour Championship.  An early start for the final round of this championship provided for some amazing scenery and picturesque backdrop to the fierce competition on display. With this being the final event the fight for the Secret Hole Challenge, as well as, the 2012 Player of the Year was center stage as a few players looked to secure these prestigious awards.

Championship Flight (0 to 3.9 Handicaps)
In the Championship Flight, Nate Strand of Olympia, WA completed his season long dominance of the flight with a 3-stroke win by shooting a two day total of 149.  Entering the day, Mr. Strand was 2-shots back and needed a tremendous final round which included 5 birdies on the day to shoot 73 to complete the comeback.  Scott Coffman of Washougal, WA was the first round leader and finished in 2nd place with a final round 78 and a two day score of 152.  In a distant 3rd place was Chad Sorenson of Portland who carded a final round of 89 and fired a total of 174.  Mr. Strand won 4 times this season and never finished worse than 3rd place in any event either.   He also accumulated more birdies on Tour this season than any other player.

Palmer Flight (4.0 to 7.9 Handicaps)
The Palmer Flight was won by Adam Byrne of Camas, WA who pulled away over the two days to win by 6-shots.  Mr. Byrne followed up his first round lead by winning day two as well.  He shot 84 on day 2 for a two day total of 163.  In 2nd place was Grant Niskanen of Klamath Falls who fired an 85 on the day to finish with a two day total of 169.  Steve Cochran of Camas, WA was in 3rd place with a total of 171. Completing the field was Michael Arnot of Portland who shot a two day total of 176 and Carl Leonard of Vancouver, WA who carded a total of 178.

Hogan Flight (8.0 to 11.9 Handicaps)
In the Hogan Flight, Jeff Weiss of Portland separated himself from the field to win by 7-strokes with a two day total of 157.  Mr. Weiss was tied after day 1 with Jerry Gregg of Redmond, WA when both players shot rounds of 6-over par 78 at the Reserve Vineyards & Golf Club.  Mr. Gregg would finish in 2nd place after his 2nd round score of 86 for a two day total of 164.  In 3rdplace was Donald Iman of Aurora who shot the second best round of the day at 82 to finish with a total of 166 over the two days.  Also playing were Clifford Reynolds of Madras who carded a two day total of 169, Bob Willyerd of Beaverton fired a two day total of 170, Rich Fox of Peoria, AZ shot a two day total of 172 and rounding out the field was the 2012 Oregon SportsNet Secret Hole Challenge Champion Jerry Fisk of Beaverton who finished with a two day total of 175.  Mr. Weiss’s day 2 round was highlighted by 11 pars on the day.

Sarazen Flight (12.0 to 15.9 Handicaps)
The Sarazen Flight saw a first time winner get his moment in the sun when Kelly Gray of Aurora captured the title with a final round 89 to finish with a two day total of 174 and a 2-shot victory. Mr. Gray had been close several times throughout the season with a total of three 2nd place finishes.  But, today was the day for all of that to change as Mr. Gray would seize the moment and then the trophy as a Champion in the Portland Tour Championship.  In 2nd place was Woody Wallis of Fairbanks, AK who rebounded after a poor showing on day 1 to win the day with a low round of 86 and a two day total of 176.  In 3rd was the 2011 Player of the Year, Gregory Smith of Washougal, WA who carded a two day total of 204.

Jones Flight (16.0 to 19.9 Handicaps)
In the Jones Flight, Fred Corona of Milwaukie completed a masterful turnaround and captured the flight crown. Trailing Kareen Queen of Bend by 7-shots entering the final round Mr. Corona fired his personal best round of 77 to win by 10-shots with a two day total of 165.  Mr. Corona’s final round was highlighted by 3 birdies and no score on any hole worse than a bogey.  Mrs. Queen followed up her personal best round on Tour of 81 with a 94 to card a two day total of 175.  In 3rd place was Jeffrey Gotchall of Milwaukie who fired a two day total of 180. Rounding out the field were Benjamin Ciobanu of Vancouver, WA who finished with a two day score of 188 and Fredrick Johnson of Beaverton who carded a two day score of 192.

Senior Jones Flight (16.0 to 19.9 Handicaps)
In the Senior Jones Flight, a Cinderella story was finally completed as Doug Tilson of Beaverton won for the first time after finishing in 2nd place 6 times on the 2012 Portland Tour schedule.  Entering the final round trailing by 3-strokes it appeared that Mr. Tilson may again be destined to finish just out of the winner’s circle.  But, a masterful backside that included a spectacular par save on the final hole would secure the victory over the 2012 Player of the Year winner Ron Humble of Junction City.  On the 18thhole, Mr. Humble appeared poised to secure the Tour Championship lying just a few feet away from the hole with an opportunity to make a par putt to win.  Mr. Tilson, on the other hand, had other things in mind when he hit his approach shot to just a couple feet and made his putt to seize the win when Mr. Humble failed to make his short putt.  Both players couldn’t believe what had just happened as they finished up their scorecards in the scoring area with the look of disbelief in one players face and the look of pure joy in the others.  But, in true Golf Channel Am Tour fashion, both players congratulated each other on a well played match.  Also playing were Walter Gotchall of Milwaukie who carded a two day total of 174, Robert Bourne of Oregon City fired a two day total of 177, Lanny Webb of Redmond finished with a two day total of 181, Brent Moschetti of Madras completed the two days with a total of 183, Bob Vidourek of Canyon City shot a two day total of 186 and completing the field was Ed Heissler of Gresham with a two day total of 201.

Snead Flight (20+ Handicaps)
In the Snead Flight, Joseph “Joe Mac” McGinley of Milwaukie went wire-to-wire to win the Tour Championship with a two day total of 189 and a 5-stroke victory.  It was Mr. McGinley’s 3rd win on Tour this season and continues his stellar play throughout.  Paul Nelson of Happy Valley finished in 2nd place with a total of 194 over the two days.  In 3rd place was Keith Pearson of Phoenix, OR who fired a two day total of 203.

The OregonSports.net Secret Hole Challenge: Jerry Fisk
After the final round of the Portland Tour Championship Kelly Gray and Jerry Fisk were tied atop the leader board in the Oregon SportsNet Secret Hole Challenge at 1-under par.  In true Secret Hole Challenge fashion both players then chose a card to determine who the winner of the $500 OSN Gift Card and trophy would be.  Jerry Fisk selected an Ace to win the title as the 2012 Oregon SportsNet Secret Hole Challenge Champion.

2012 Player of the Year: Ron Humble
Going into the Portland Tour Championship the race for Player of the Year was down to two familiar faces, Gregory Smith, the 2011 Player of the Year and the 2011 Runner-Up, Ron Humble.  But, after a fine 2nd place finish in his flight for Mr. Humble he would claim the outright title as the 2012 Portland Tour Player of the Year.  Mr. Humble received the Player of the Year trophy as well as a $100 Gift Card to Golf Galaxy to celebrate his amazing playing throughout the tour season.

The 2013 TOUR season will begin this FALL at Pronghorn and then Bandon Dunes Resort. More information can be found on our website -http://GCAmTour.com/Portland/posting the week of September 17th, so keep your eyes out for the exact dates coming soon…
