PORTLAND, Ore. – Cedric Hunter clubbed his first Triple-A home run and later robbed one as the Portland Beavers concluded the 2007 season with a 3-2 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies before 9,640 Monday afternoon at PGE Park.
Roger Deago (3-5) picked up the win, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out five over six innings for the Beavers, who were 58-86 on the season.
Jared Wells, who didn’t allowed a run over his final 15 appearances, retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his ninth save.
Sun-Woo Kim (8-8) took the loss, giving up three runs and five hits to go with five strikeouts in five innings of work for the Grizzlies (77-69).
Hunter, playing just his third game with the Beavers, belted a second-inning, two-run homer and Jon Schemmel added a solo shot to left during the next frame as the Beavers got out to a 3-0 lead.
The Grizzlies scored two runs in the sixth. Justin Leone drew a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third when the throw down was offline and scored on a groundout. Justin Knoedler and Brian Hortwitz then logged back-to-back doubles to plate a second run.
With a leaping catch above the fence in left, Hunter stole a home run from pinch-hitter Scott McClain with a runner on base in the seventh inning, drawing a standing ovation from the crowd of almost 10,000.
NOTES: The Beavers drew 388,963 fans to PGE Park this season, an average of 5,478 fans per game … the team averaged 7,361 per game for July, August and September games … Beavers players tossed t-shirts into the stands and signed autographs for thousands of fans on the field after the game.
