Exciting Finish To Open Championship
Written by GCAmTour.com/Portland    Sunday, 22 July 2012 00:45

RIDGEFIELD, WA—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of Portland continued their 2012 season at Tri-Mountain Golf Club on Saturday with the Portland Open Championship.  The course was in amazing shape and the weather was equally as gorgeous. The small field still yielded plenty of excitement throughout the day. This tournament was the 2nd of the Summer Series and players were definitely doing all they could to improve their standing.  With only a few events left on the Tour’s regular season the fight for the Secret Hole Challenge as well as the player of the year is starting to heat up.

Palmer Flight (4.0 to 7.9 Handicaps)

In the Palmer Flight, Michael Arnot of Portland finally got his first victory on Tour.  Mr. Arnot has played in multiple events this season and always had just a few stumbles which have kept him out of the winners circle.  But, on this gorgeous July day, Mr. Arnot grinded out a 10-over par round of 82 to win by 3-shots over Carl Leonard of Vancouver, WA who is a five time winner on Tour this season.  Mr. Arnot’s round was highlighted by 2 birdies over the final 5-holes to claim his first win. Mr. Leonard’s 85 was highlighted by 11-pars but an equally disappointing 11 on the par-5, 9th hole would prove to be his undoing.  Following in 3rd place in this flight was Adam Byrne of Camas, WA who finished at 15-over par, 87 on the day.

Hogan Flight (8.0 to 11.9 Handicaps)

In the Hogan Flight, Jerry Fisk of Beaverton claimed his victory when he outlasted Harold Farnsworth of Vancouver, WA by 2-shots.  Mr. Fisk finished at 14-over par, 86 while Mr. Farnsworth’s late charge left him at 16-over par, 88.  Mr. Fisk’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par 3, 11th hole. On the other hand, Mr. Farnsworth’s round was highlight by two birdies, on the par 5, 7th hole as well as the par 3, 15th.  Both players owned the lead throughout the day in this seesaw affair.  Mr. Fisk took an early lead when Mr. Farnsworth again struggled to get much started over the first few holes of his round.  But after multiple pars and a birdie on the 7th, Mr. Farnsworth seized the lead.  The lead would be short lived and exchange a couple more times down the stretch.  Mr. Fisk would really ride the rollercoaster down the stretch with a 7-3-7 finish that gave Mr. Farnsworth some openings but alas he could not catch Mr. Fisk.  Mr. Farnsworth continues to seek that elusive first victory on Tour after another day filled with opportunity and disappointment.  Mr. Fisk was very happy to get his hands on the trophy and it shows in the joy you see in the championship photos.

Sarazen Flight (12.0 to 15.9 Handicaps)

The Sarazen Flight was won by Woody Wallis of Fairbanks, AK who made a triumphant return back to the Portland Am Tour.  Mr. Wallis finished with a round of 9-over par, 81 to rip victory from the hands of Lloyd Hurt of Washougal, WA by one stroke.  This truly was a hotly contested affair with both players taking small leads throughout the day, none of which were more than one-shot.  Mr. Hurt took the early lead on the first hole, but would give it right back after holes two and three.  Mr. Wallis would maintain his slim one-shot lead for the next few holes but then a bogey on the 8th would make things all tied up again.  Both players made tremendous approach shots into the par-5, 9th hole and finished the side off with matching birdies.  Mr. Hurt would again take a lead after a double-bogey by Mr. Wallis on the 10th.  But again the lead would be short lived as Mr. Hurt bogeyed the 11th to make things even again.  On the par 4, 12th hole both players again made birdie on the same hole.  From that point on the lead would exchange a couple more times.  After all of that, going into 17 and 18 both players were tied at 9-over par.  Mr. Wallis wrestled the victory away by making par on the last to win by one when Mr. Hurt struggled and made a bogey.  Following in 3rd place was Fredrick Johnson of Beaverton with a score of 91.

Jones Flight (16.0 to 19.9 Handicaps)

The largest flight of the day was the Jones Flight and it had plenty of interesting story lines, but ultimately the ending was the same.  Ron Humble of Junction City finished at 11-over par, 83 to claim his fourth victory in-a-row.  Mr. Humble is already qualified for the National Championship at TPC Sawgrass in September and again proved why he is a very strong candidate for Player of the Year honors on the Portland Tour.  Mr. Humble’s round was very consistent and was highlighted by 9 pars on the day.  In 2nd place was Gregory Smith of Washougal, WA who returned from a short break to shoot 87 and was once again in contention at another event.  Also playing were Robert Bourne of Oregon City who finished with a 92 and Benjamin Ciobanu of Vancouver, WA who also finished with a 92.  Rounding out the field was Doug Tilson of Beaverton who struggled on the day and finished with a disappointing 100.
