Wet And Wild Ending In Camas
Written by    Sunday, 01 July 2012 10:00

CAMAS, WA—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of Portland continued their 2012 season at Camas Meadows Golf Club on Saturday with the Camas Meadows Invitational.  The course was in amazing shape to start the day but a nasty bit of weather moved in bringing lots of rain with it.  The result was a soggy golf course, soggy players and scores that were less than impressive on an already tough course.  The field itself featured defending champions in multiple flights who looked to defend their 2011 titles.  This tournament marked the beginning of the Summer Series and players were eager to get off on the right foot and earn their way into the 2012 National Championships at TPC Sawgrass in September.

The Championship Flight was dominated by Nate Strand of Olympia, WA who returned from a brief break on Tour to post a 1-over par round of 73 to win by 11 shots.  Mr. Strand’s round had the potential of being one of the best all year as he started off on fire with a 1-under par, 35 on the front side.  He would struggle just slightly on the back with a double bogey on the par 4, 11th and a bogey on hole 14.  The 11th hole saw him make the biggest error of the day, but it was a team effort, as his caddie tried to remind him of where not to go right in the middle of his swing causing an errant drive.  Mr. Strand wouldn’t let that deter him though from finishing off the round in style with a birdie on the par-5 closing hole to finish at just 1-over par on the day.  His round was highlighted by 3 birdies on holes 4, 9 and 18. Following in 2nd place was Chad Sorenson of Portland who had a rough day and finished with an 84.

In the Palmer Flight, Carl Leonard of Vancouver, WA won for the 3rd straight time for the first time on Tour this season. This flight was very tightly bunched at the turn with all four players within 5 strokes of each other.  At the end of the front nine it was Adam Byrne of Camas, WA who owned the lead at 4-over, 40 and was followed closely by Mr. Leonard at 41, Steve Cochran of Camas, WA at 42 and Kevin Krueger of West Linn at 45.  The action would heat up on the back with the tightly bunched players exchanging the lead several times.  Over the final 6 holes, Mr. Leonard would find his stride and make six pars in-a-row.  Those pars would be the difference for Mr. Leonard who finished at 8-over par, 80 to sneak past Mr. Cochran at 12-over, 84 and Mr. Byrne at 13-over par, 85.  Finishing in fourth was Mr. Krueger who carded a 91.  Mr. Cochran had bookend birdies but couldn’t manage to make many pars with only 7 all day long.  The lack of consistency from other players in the flight was all the cushion Mr. Leonard needed to capture his 5th title this season.

In the Hogan Flight Jeff Weiss of Portland returned to Tour play after a long break and proved that he had no rust from the layoff.  Mr. Weiss managed to shoot 12-over par despite a 10 on the par-5, 18th hole to win for the 1st time on Tour this season. Mr. Weiss was on cruise control until that point leading by as many as 7-shots late in the round.  The 18th was also not kind to Jerry Fisk of Beaverton who carded a double bogey to finish just 3-shots back in 2nd place with a round of 15-over par, 87.  Mr. Weiss’ round was highlighted by birdies on the par-4 4th and 15th holes.  Completing the flight was Clifford Reynolds of Madras who finished with a total score of 90.   An interesting side note was that every player in this flight shot the same score of 43 on the back side despite their struggles on the finishing hole.

The Sarazen Flight was won by defending champion Kathy Provazek of Mercer Island, WA with her round of 17-over par, 89.  Her score was good enough for the 5-shot victory after a see-saw affair.  Following in 2nd place was QV Heritage Champion Lloyd Hurt of Washougal, WA with a round of 95.  Mr. Hurt actually held the lead several times throughout the day including a 1-shot advantage after the par-4, 14th hole.  But, he would struggle from that point on, including a 9 on the final hole to fall from 1-shot back with a chance to win, to 5-shots back and a shake of Ms. Provazek’s hand as she captured the title again.  Mr. Hurt did have a nice round highlighting birdie on the par-3, 8th hole though.  Ms. Provazek, on the other hand, didn’t have one birdie on the day but her consistent play with 8 pars was good enough to get another win in Portland for the visiting player from Seattle.  Following in 3rd place was Fredrick Johnson of Beaverton with a score of 104 and in 4th was Dan Siguaw of Kirkland, WA with a 105.

The largest flight of the day was the Jones Flight and it had plenty of interesting story lines from top to bottom.  For example, Ron Humble of Junction City was looking to earn back-to-back wins for the 1st time this season and Doug Tilson of Beaverton was looking for his 1st victory after four 2nd place finishes on Tour this season.  In the end, Mr. Humble would get his way shooting 20-over par, 92 to win by 1-shot over Mr. Tilson who finished with a 93.  Another bridesmaid finish for the man from Beaverton who continues to seek that elusive first win.  On this day it was not about going low but rather about surviving and not blowing up with a huge number.  Mr. Humble would be the most consistent in doing that to claim the title.  Also competing in this flight was Robert Bourne of Oregon City with a 97, Fred Corona of Gresham who carded a 100, Brent Moschetti of Madras who scrambled to a 101, Ed Heissler of Gresham shot a 107, Walter Gotchall of Milwaukie also finished with a 107 and Benjamin Ciobanu of Vancouver, WA carded a 114.

The final flight of the day was the Snead Flight and it was a duel between Keith Pearson of Phoenix, OR and Joseph “JoeMac” McGinley of Milwaukie.  On this wet and nasty day it was Mr. Pearson who would outlast the youngster from Milwaukie to claim his 3rd win on Tour this season.  Mr. Pearson finished the day at 31-over par, 103 while Mr. McGinley could only manage a 110.  Both players struggled throughout the day to get anything positive going with the wet conditions.  In the end, it was Mr. Pearson’s ability to minimize the damage on several holes which would allow him to earn another trophy for the mantle.

The TOUR season returns to action at the Portland Open Championship on July 21st at Tri-Mountain Golf Club in Ridgefield, WA.  Registration for that event is open until July 14th so we encourage you to visit REGISTER TODAY!
