Eighteen Not Enough At Eagle Crest
Written by GCAmTour.com/Portland    Monday, 04 June 2012 00:30

REDMOND, OR—The GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour of Portland continued their 2012 season at Eagle Crest Resort on the Ridge Course Sunday with the High Desert Championship.  The course was in great shape and the weather was perfect for scoring as we only had a light breeze on a course that is known to have very windy conditions.  The field was composed of a wide variety of very accomplished players as well as visiting members from across the country.  With the first half of the Tour season waning many players were eager to stockpile as many points as possible in an effort to qualify for the 2012 National Championship at TPC Sawgrass in September.  In the end, this day would be remembered for its two playoff finishes, one in the Sarazen flight and the other in the Senior Snead flight.

In the Palmer Flight, Carl Leonard returned to the winner’s circle with a runaway win of 8-shots in carding a 4-over par, 76.  Mr. Leonard has now won 3 times on tour and is automatically qualified to play in the National Championship at TPC Sawgrass with this win.  Mr. Leonard also shot a 76 this season in winning the Oregon Masters and continues to prove that he is an odds on favorite every time he is in the field.   Mr. Leonard’s round was highlighted by birdies on holes # 1 & #14. Following Mr. Leonard in 2nd place was Grant Niskanen of Klamath Falls who shot an 84.  Completing this flight was Darrin Dow of Redmond who had to withdraw after experiencing extreme back pain over the first few holes of his round.

The Hogan Flight was won by Jerry Browning of Stanwood, WA who survived the day to win.  Mr. Browning carded his best round on Tour ever with a 5-over par, 77.  Because of extenuating circumstances, Mr. Browning ended up being the only member in this flight after several late withdrawals.  Mr. Browning’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the par-5, 9th hole when he rolled in a very lengthy down-hiller.  This was the first victory for Mr. Browning on Tour this season. A member of the Seattle chapter of the Golf Channel Am Tour, Mr. Browning will try to continue his winning ways there.

The Sarazen Flight again was one of the most exciting of the day with a two-hole, three way playoff to determine the Champion.  Ted Calico of Des Moines, WA, B.J. Cardinal of Ashland and Patrick Gutridge of Hurst, TX all finished their rounds with 15-over par, 87s.  The playoff began at the 1st hole with all 3 players making bogey on the first playoff hole and heading to the par-5 9th for hole #2 of the playoff.  After a tremendous approach, Mr. Calico was able to seal the deal and win in back-to-back fashion. Even before the playoff there was excitement brewing as going into the 18th hole Mr. Gutridge owned the lead, by two shots over Mr. Cardinal and by 3 over Mr. Calico.  The par-5 finishing hole would prove to be treacherous with Mr. Gutridge only managing to make a triple bogey and opening the door to the other two players.  Mr. Cardinal had made a bogey to tie and Mr. Calico made a solid par to tie as well.  Not to be left out of the excitement, Bryan King of Eugene finished just one-shot back with a 16-over par round of 88.  His double-bogey on the par-4, 17th hole proved to be costly for Mr. King.

In the Jones Flight, Kareen Queen of Bend got her 1st win on Tour this season with a 14-over par round of 86. Playing on a course that she has had success on in other tournaments, Mrs. Queen shot her lowest round of the season and won by 5-shots. She was unable to card any birdies on the day but did make 8-pars, 6 bogeys and 4 double-bogeys. Following her in 2nd place was Fred Corona of Gresham with a 91 and in 3rd was Jeffrey Gotchall of Milwaukie who struggled on the day and finished with a 26-over par round of 98.

In the Senior Jones Flight, Walter Gotchall of Gresham prevailed with a great round of 11-over par, 83 to win going away.  This was Mr. Gothcall’s lowest round of the Tour season and it was highlighted by a skin winning birdie on the par-4, 5th hole. Following behind Mr. Gotchall were Doug Tilson of Beaverton with a 92, Lanny Webb of Redmond with a 93 and Brent Moschetti of Madras with a 94. Mr. Tilson continues to play the bridesmaid role as this is now his fourth 2nd place finish on the Tour season thus far.  Mr. Tilson will look to change that trend at the upcoming Quail Valley Heritage event on June 17th at Quail Valley Golf Club in Banks, OR.

The Senior Snead Flight needed one extra hole to determine it’s champion. Keith Pearson of Phoenix, OR and Hank Queen of Bend both had great days, finishing their rounds at 10-over par, 82.  Both players recorded their lowest rounds on Tour and setup the one-hole playoff.  Mr. Pearson would survive that 1st playoff hole to claim his 2nd victory on Tour this season.  It was definitely a day that will not be soon forgot by either player.

SECRET HOLE: #8
