Cross Country - Warner Pacific Invitational:

PORTLAND – Jilinda Franklin (Sr., Fort Jones, Calif.) lowered her personal best at the 5,000-meter distance Saturday, leading the Pacific cross country teams at the Warner Pacific Invitational, held at Lents Park.

Franklin finished 17th in the race with a time of 18:56.62.  The performance was a 29-second personal best for the senior and moved Franklin up to No. 6 on Pacific’s All-Time Top-25 List at the distance.  The impressive performance led the Pacific women to a ninth place team finish with 248 points.

The Pacific men, led by a 27th place finish by Tyler Shipley (Fr., Forest Grove, Ore.), also finished ninth in the teamrace with a score of 221 points.

Both teams competed without a pair of their top runners.  Rachel Schreiber (So., Longmont, Colo.) and Hayley Brusewitz (Jr., Longview, Wash.) sat out the women’s race while Joe Deardorff (Sr., Independence, Ore.) and Jerry Sanchez (Sr., Mecca, Calif.) missed the men’s competition.

Kiersten Iwai (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) stepped in as the Pacific women’s No. 2 runner, finishing in 54th place in a time of 19:57.43 to list No. 23 on the Boxers’ all-time list.  Punneh Abdolhosseini (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) placed 67th in a time of 20:32.99 and Sidney Davis (Fr., Redmond, Ore) was right behind in 20:33.68.  Ally Shackelford (Jr., Portland, Ore.) rounded out the scoring five, finishing 70th in 20:40.21.

Shipley finished in 27th place in the men’s race, covering the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:04.10.   Dan Flora (Sr., North Bend, Ore.) turned in a solid race, placing 53rd in a time of 26:47.97.  Rudy Sanchez (Jr., Albany, Ore.) finished in 78th place in a time of 27:54.06, Wes Porter (Jr., Elk Grove, Calif.) placed 89th in 28:39.54 and Ryan Baxter (So., Craig Alaska) rounded out the scoring five with a 95th place time of 29:10.72.

Southern Oregon won the men’s team competition with a score of 34 points, led Eric Avila’s winning time of 24:32.51.  The University of Portland won the women’s race with 56 points, paced by Merel Van Steenbergen’s winning time of 17:22.14.
